In 2021, the Centro Internacional e Iberoamericano de Arbitraje de Madrid (CIIAM) and the Spanish Section of the International Association for Insurance Law (SEAIDA) agreed to jointly promote international arbitration in the insurance and reinsurance sectors.
Under this collaboration, SEAIDA agreed to transfer to CIIAM the jurisdiction and competence over international arbitration in insurance, reinsurance, and pension funds matters, which had previously been statutorily assigned to the Spanish Insurance Arbitration Court. Nevertheless, the latter body continues to administer domestic cases.
As a result of this cooperation, SEAIDA and CIIAM established a Working Group on International Arbitration in Insurance and Reinsurance. The Group, composed of experts in arbitration and insurance and reinsurance law, aims to analyze opportunities for the development and promotion of arbitration in the insurance sector through CIIAM, as well as the possibility of conducting research and training activities in this field.
